SESSION ABSTRACT


In this session, high school administrators and support staff will detail strategies and interventions used to target at-risk students to increase student attendance and performance and ultimately increase high school graduation rates.


PRESENTER INFORMATION


David Colwell has served as a high school administrator for 16 years and is currently principal at Hibriten High School. Before becoming an administrator, he was a social studies teacher for 18 years. Mr. Colwell has degrees from the Citadel, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and Southeastern Community College and served 6 years in the United States Army Reserves.

Beth Hinshaw has a Masters Degree in Social Work and is a Certified School Social Worker in North Carolina. She has been working with schools for 17 years and has worked with students and families from all grade levels, K-12. Mrs. Hinshaw currently serves the largest high school in the county and helps at-risk students by removing barriers to their academic success.

Pam Barber has a BSN in nursing from North Carolina and is a National Certified School Nurse. She has been the Lead School Nurse for Caldwell County Schools for the past 17 years in which she has served children from Pre-K through high school. Currently, Mrs. Barber serves in the largest high school in the county focusing on prevention and well-being for students and families through education regarding healthy lifestyle choices and management of chronic diseases.

Tamara Dillard has been the data manager at South Caldwell High School for 13 years. Mrs. Dillard has worked on the school’s At Risk Committee for the past 4 years.

Mike Peake is an educator with more than 20 years experience, with over 10 years experience as a building level principal. Under his tenure as the principal of South Caldwell High School, the school has moved from a 4-year cohort graduation rate of 62.4% to 95.2% within the last nine years. Mr. Peake is a graduate of The Citadel - BS and Masters, and Appalachian State University - Ed S and is blessed with a beautiful wife for over 20 years - Catherine, and two wonderful children – Carrington, age 5, and Micah, age 8.
